Episode 17: The Justin Republic Of Awesome

Netflix CEO calls out Comcast on net neutrality; reading all the privacy policies you agree to in a year would take a month; and the Internet’s biggest dirt bag took his site off the web. Also: should Justin found his own sovereign nation in the mountains of Montana? And if he does, should it be called “The Justin Republic of Awesome” or the much less cool “Justopia”?  All this and more in episode 17 of Technophilia: The Justin Republic of Awesome.

This week: James uses we7.com to listen to music, and the owner is apparently one of his drinking buddies. Justin lets you know how to make an em (—) or en (–) dashes on your computer, whatever operating system you use. He also thinks you should be watching a show by ze frank. And Dave talks about the social radio app Soundrop, which drives Justin to drink.

And, as always, the headlines:

All this, and an answer to a fan question: “What is your opinion on DRM systems such as Steam?”. Send us your questions

The great thing about windows is it's so easy to customise. There's ways to map keyboard shortcuts, add buttons to toolbars, etc. However, I'm very shortcut orientated, so I would end up using the alt code anyway if I was using it a lot.

Have you never heard of character map? It's one of the most basic Windows features, and includes a dash, endash, emdash, and more. You can find it by pressing start and typing "character map" or by going to Start > All Programs > System Tools > Character Map I often use EmDash in web development, especially when trying to do layered select boxes, but then I just use the entity code — Germany is one of the main reasons (most of) Europe isn't broke yet. They seem to have a strong economy, which is pretty amazing since they were completely broke about 60 years ago. People in cities don't say "lets plaster every surface with ads", but billboards, bus stops, and other key surfaces are ad hotspots. For the games that require internet to validate the license, there's a special way to play when you don't have access to an internet connection - pirate the game, as the pirated version will have the restriction removed. Personally I'd either not play the game, or buy it then grab a pirated / unrestricted copy to actually play. I'm so tempted to cut out the "Shut the fuck up, you're not entitled to shit" because that would be such a useful soundbyte in my day to day life.

There is always the character map. But opening a program in order to copy and paste something can seriously interrupt the flow of writing. Writing is, after all, 99% not being distracted... The German economy is amazing, as are their street festivals. I really want to visit that country again.

Okay, it converted the html entity for emdash. It's actually —

Great episode as usual, guys. Strangely I submitted an article earlier in the week all about the artists who should be given the Tupac treatment. Michael Jackson makes an appearance.

I know I'm not dead, but I think I should be made into a hologram. This way, I can sit there and make fun of myself. It would be awesome.

A 2d version of you on skype is enough to make me want to punch you.

Even better you could send it over to James' house and have it mock him mercilessly until he goes insane and renounces his love of Apple.
